Beer Judge

John Tull began making beer for himself and his friends in 1994 just prior to moving to Utah to begin graduate school. While working on his Ph.D. in Reno, Nevada, John became interested in judging beer, mead and cider through his friends and colleagues in the Washoe Zephyr Zymurgists, a homebrew club with strong and early representation in the Beer Judge Certification Program. He took the BJCP exam in 2001 and gradually has risen to the rank of Grand Master I. John has judged in more than 50 beer competitions and organized eight, including the AHA National Homebrew Competition final round in 2009. Outside of his life as a beer judge, John is a wildlife ecologist focused on conservation of fragile desert landscapes and the wildlife that live there. He and his wife Marlene have two wonderful daughters and a French Brittany named Jaca.

7B Hazy IPA

7B Hazy IPA, Laughing Dog Brewing
Description

This New England style IPA is as delicious as it is hazy with a juicy, full mouthfeel. Tons of citrus and tropical flavor and aroma dominate this beer thanks to copious amounts of Simcoe, Citra, El Dorado, Amarillo, and Mosaic hops added in the whirlpool and then again during active fermentation. Low bitterness and a sessionable ABV means you can kick back and enjoy more than one!

The aroma is intensely roasty and backed by a huge coffee smell. Vegetable and unroasted coffee aromatics indicate that there may be an infusion of green coffee beans in this beer. Chocolate nibs come through after a little warming in the glass. The color is nearly black, very much opaque, and... Read More

Passion Fruit Double IPA by Garage Brewing Co. was judged as Fruit Beer (29A BJCP 2021) with a base style of Double IPA (22A). A neutral malty aroma with a hint of crystal malt rests underneath a relatively subtle fruit character. Fruit aromas hint at nectarine and pineapple, but are quite... Read More

Sweet and grainy wheat malt combines with orange flesh aromas in the nose of this beer. Hints of orange peel and herbal qualities from hops or additions are also detectable. The color is gold with copper hints, slightly dark for the style. The head is white with fine bubbles that persist and... Read More

A menagerie of well-developed aromas that includes cedar and pine with hints of cherry, raspberry and nectarine issues forth from the glass. This beer has a cloudy and somewhat murky, copper color to it with a light, off-white head that wisps the surface and clings thinly to the edge of the... Read More

This beer was judged as a Wild Specialty Beer (28C). A mild citrus and a floral component intermix with a yeasty/bready (a hint of raw bread dough) aroma. None of these aromatic qualities really dominates over another, making for a relatively subdued aroma that does not overpower the senses in... Read More
