Beer Judge

Jason Johnson has been homebrewing since 2000 and a ranked judge with the BJCP since 2005. He currently holds the rank of National Judge. Jason was the Co-founder and Co-Host of Brewnology: The Podcast where they explored all avenues of Beer Judging for their listeners. Although the show had a good 2 year run, they ran out of judging content at 50 shows and had to call it quits. Past episodes of Brewnology can still be found on YouTube. Jason is also the author of an e-book titled Roasted: A Homebrewer's Guide to Homeroasting Grain.

Although currently an independent homebrewer no longer active in a local club, Jason was a member of the Manty Malter's homebrew club in, Wisconsin. Jason has held several officer positions within the club including president as well as lead the club's judging education program. He also has a set of free BJCP Prep classes on YouTube to help judges who may not have a nearby club to supplement their self-study. He also helps these people by answering questions via messages. So far the course has been fairly popular and helped some judges in other countries study for their exams.

As a brewer, Jason mostly likes to brew traditional classic styles. He brews a lot of American ales (America Pale Ales, American IPA, and American Pre-Prohibition Lager). Other styles he likes to brew are Chocolate Oatmeal Stout, Belgian Wit, Saison, Dubbel, and Cream Ale to name a few. As far as craft beer goes, he enjoys tasting and Judging the full gambit of the beer spectrum.

Timbo Pils by Highland Park Brewery was judged as an International Pale Lager. The beer is called a West Coast-Style Pilsner, so I will treat this like an IPL (India Pale Lager), which is going to have many of the same hopping characteristics you look for in a IPA, but... Read More

This is a specialty beer for sure! There is a lot going on here: coffee, oatmeal, maple syrup, bacon... all we're missing is the pancakes! The beer pours a very dark brown (nearly black) beer with garnet highlights, a dense cream-colored head that didn’t last all that long, with overall good... The beer pours a nice, ruby red color with deep clarity, and a slightly pink fizzy head sits atop and dissipates fairly quickly. The aroma is quite nice and inviting with some sour cherry, and a slight lactic sourness coming in second. There are background hints of nuts and some dark soil, which... Read More

This beer was given to me as a BJCP category 28 C., Barrel Aged American Sour Ale on raspberries and cranberries.

The appearance of the beer is a light pink blush color and is very clear. It's a good looking fruited beer to say the least. It poured a low fizzy white head with very low... Read More

Grapefruit Deuce Coupe DIPA by Garage Brewing Co. was judged as a Double IPA (BJCP Style 22A).

Moderate aroma of grapefruit and piney hops. Pretty standard in what you would expect based on the description. The malt profile is lightly sweet in aroma with bready with a low toasty quality.... Read More

Hello, LA by Highland Park Brewery is a classic West Coast-Style IPA, so I will be judging it against Category 21A, American IPA.

The beer poured a yellow color with a slight haze, suggesting that dry hopping was involved. The head is pillowy and long-lasting.... Read More
